Mildred Montag

Mildred Guy Montag is a woman shaped entirely by the consumer culture and entertainment technologies that dominate her dystopian world. She decorates their home with expensive wall-sized television screens, treating them as windows to the only reality that matters to her, and has named the characters in her favorite programs as her closest friends. Her emotional landscape is managed through sleeping pills and sedatives, which she uses to keep distressing thoughts at bay, and her conversation revolves around the shallow dramas of the shows she watches. Though married to Guy Montag, she exists in a separate psychological universe from him, unable or unwilling to engage with his growing concerns about the society they inhabit. Mildred represents the willing participant in her own intellectual and emotional diminishment, preferring the comfort of distraction to the discomfort of thought, and she ultimately becomes a tragic figure trapped within the very system that offers her escape.
