How CharacterViz works
CharacterViz is a reading companion for complex fiction: character reference, chapter-aware analysis, private notes, and fan theories — all gated to your bookmark, so nothing you read here ever reads ahead of you.
Where our analysis comes from
We don't claim to fully or accurately analyze any novel without its source text. We help readers organize, debate, and visualize as they read — and we label every piece of content with where it came from. You'll see these badges throughout the site:
The book's full public-domain text is on file with us. Character descriptions and chapter analysis are drawn from the original passages — not invented.
We don't hold this book's text, so AI produces starting points only. Readers review, correct, and publish them — nothing becomes canon here without a person signing off.
Grounded in a copy of the text a reader uploaded privately. The analysis is text-based, and the uploaded text is never shared with anyone else.
One rule holds everywhere: if the book never describes something — a character's face, for instance — we don't guess. Portraits are only generated from published descriptions.
What's free, and what tokens buy

Spoiler-safe by design
Set your bookmark as you read and CharacterViz keeps pace: chapter analysis warns you before you read past your place, and theories tagged with spoilers stay locked until your bookmark catches up.
It’s the reading-group conversation — without the friend who’s already finished the book.
Frequently asked questions
Is CharacterViz spoiler-free?
Yes. Set your bookmark as you read and CharacterViz keeps pace — chapter analysis warns you before you read past your place, and spoiler-tagged theories stay locked until your bookmark catches up.
Where does CharacterViz’s character analysis come from?
For public-domain books we hold the full text, so character descriptions and chapter analysis are drawn from the original passages. For other books, AI produces starting points that readers review and publish. Every piece of content is labeled with where it came from.
How much does CharacterViz cost?
Most of CharacterViz is free — browsing the library, following chapter guides, posting theories, and keeping private notes never cost tokens. Tokens are one-time purchases that pay for generating new analysis and rendering portraits, with no subscription required.
Does CharacterViz invent what characters look like?
No. Portraits are only generated from physical descriptions published in the book. If the text never describes a character’s appearance, CharacterViz doesn’t guess.
Can AI help me understand complex book characters?
Yes, with one caveat: a general AI chatbot has already "read" the whole book, so it has no built-in sense of what you, a reader at chapter 4, actually know yet — even careful prompting leaks eventually. CharacterViz is built around that specific problem: every character bio, relationship, and chapter analysis is generated or revealed only up to your bookmark, so the help doesn’t come with a spoiler risk attached.
What’s the best AI tool for literary analysis?
It depends on what you need. Static study sites are faster for exam prep. General chatbots are more flexible for obscure titles. If what you want is to track a complex cast and ask "who is this again?" while reading, without any risk of the answer reaching past where you are, that’s the specific job CharacterViz is built for.

Past the basic plot summary, CharacterViz adds chapter-by-chapter analysis with themes and notable quotes, a visual relationship map of how the cast connects, and a space for fan theories and private notes — all gated to your bookmark so going deeper never means reading ahead.
