Mr. Brocklehurst

Mr. Brocklehurst is the superintendent and clergyman overseeing Lowood School, a charitable institution ostensibly devoted to the education of poor and orphaned girls. He wields religious authority as a weapon, couching cruelty and humiliation in the language of moral improvement and Christian discipline. His philosophy of education centers on breaking the spirits of the children in his charge, denying them comfort and physical nourishment under the guise of mortifying their pride. He is cold, unforgiving, and unmoved by the suffering he inflicts, seeing punishment and deprivation not as evils to be regretted but as necessary tools for shaping submissive, obedient souls.
