Character · Jane Eyre
Mr. Mason
Mr. Mason is a gentleman from Madeira who becomes an instrument of fate in Jane Eyre's story. Through his acquaintance with Jane Eyre's uncle, he learns of Jane Eyre's impending marriage to Edward Rochester and becomes aware of a fact that makes that marriage impossible. Shocked and distressed, he makes the difficult journey to England, accompanied by a solicitor, to prevent the marriage from taking place. His sudden appearance at the altar and his revelation of Edward Rochester's hidden circumstances constitute a pivotal moment in Jane Eyre's life, the point at which her romantic expectations are shattered and her moral testing truly begins.
