Thénardier

Madame Thénardier is a man of murky morality and calculating self-interest, operating in the margins between respectability and criminality. As the innkeeper of Montfermeil, he initially poses as a dutiful caretaker while systematically exploiting the child Cosette left in his care. He extracts ever-increasing sums from Jean Valjean under the pretense of Cosette's needs, all the while treating her with brutal indifference and using her as unpaid labor. His essential character is opportunistic—he pursues profit without regard for the suffering he causes, viewing human beings as resources to be exploited.

Madame Thénardier possesses a cunning that extends beyond simple theft into elaborate schemes of extortion and manipulation. Yet his criminality remains petty and bounded by his limited imagination. Later in the novel, he becomes involved in various criminal enterprises, always searching for the main chance that will elevate his circumstances. Though he claims past military valor, his actual cowardice and selfishness become apparent in moments of genuine danger. Madame Thénardier represents the ordinary, undramatic evil of those who profit from social misery without ideological commitment—evil motivated purely by appetite and opportunity.
