Captain Bildad

Captain Ahab Bildad is a retired Nantucket whaling captain and part-owner of the Pequod. Born and raised in the strict Quaker tradition for which Nantucket is known, Bildad rose through the ranks from cabin-boy to captain over a lifetime at sea, accumulating wealth and shares in whaling ventures. Unlike his business partner Peleg, Bildad has never abandoned his Quaker faith, despite the obvious contradictions between his peaceful religious creed and his violent professional past. He refuses to bear arms against land invaders out of conscientious principle, yet has hunted whales relentlessly across two oceans. In his retirement years, he devotes himself to receiving his well-earned income and maintaining moral propriety, though sailors recall him as a demanding captain who drove his crews mercilessly. When Ishmael and others come aboard to sign ship's papers, Bildad meets them in the cabin with a mixture of scriptural admonishment and shrewd business acumen, urging the harpooneers toward piety while ensuring the ship's commercial success. His continued presence aboard the Pequod during its outfitting suggests both his financial stake in the voyage and his lingering connection to the whaling life he has nominally left behind.
