Daggoo

Daggoo is a powerful harpooneer of African heritage who serves as the boat-steerer for Stubb, the Pequod's second mate. Experienced in the whaling trade, he brings both physical strength and sharp maritime perception to the hunt. When the white whale Moby Dick is first named during Captain Ahab's deck assembly, Daggoo joins Tashtego and Queequeg in recognizing the whale's distinctive features—its bushy spout, unusual appearance, and the numerous harpoons embedded in its body—suggesting he and his fellow harpooneers have accumulated knowledge of this notorious creature through seafaring lore or prior glimpses. Stationed frequently at the mast-head as a lookout, Daggoo's height and keen vision make him exceptionally suited to spotting distant whales. His commanding voice and authoritative presence among the crew are evident in his ability to rouse sleeping men with such force and clarity that they respond instantaneously. Though he speaks less frequently than some of his messmates, when he does contribute his observations, they carry weight and attention.
