Starbuck

Starbuck serves as the chief mate of Captain Ahab's whaling vessel, the Pequod. A professional seaman of long experience, he is marked by his steadfast competence and his conscience—qualities that place him in anguished tension with Captain Ahab's monomaniacal pursuit of Moby Dick. Where other officers embrace the hunt with either Stubb's careless gaiety or Flask's aggressive ignorance, Starbuck alone perceives the moral peril of the voyage and the captain's hidden madness. He commands respect through his collected demeanor and his visible struggle between loyalty to his captain and duty to his crew. Though he possesses the moral clarity to see the danger ahead, his constrained position within the ship's hierarchy and his own paralysis prevent him from acting decisively to alter their course.
