Steelkilt

Steelkilt, the Lakeman, is a sailor of uncommon intelligence and self-possession who serves as bowsman aboard the Town-Ho during a fateful whaling voyage. Originally from the Great Lakes, he brings to the ship a quiet authority and the ability to think several moves ahead of his shipmates. When the tyrannical mate Radney strikes him in a brutal humiliation, Steelkilt's pride is wounded—but rather than rage openly, he chooses a path of cold, methodical calculation. He persuades the crew to abandon mutiny in favor of a coordinated passive resistance: they will obey all orders to the last, then desert at port. Simultaneously, he builds in secret the means of his private revenge, braiding a deadly weapon in the darkness of the forecastle. Steelkilt represents a rare combination of sailor cunning and moral agency; he orchestrates both collective resistance and personal retribution with the precision of a chess player. When Moby Dick rises and the boats are lowered, fate and the whale accomplish what Steelkilt had planned to do by his own hand. After Radney's violent death, Steelkilt seizes control of the abandoned ship, leads the crew in desertion, and later hunts down the captain across the Pacific, extracting a binding oath before disappearing into legend. He is a figure of mystery—part avenger, part visionary—whose ultimate destination no man can say.
