Portrait of George Wickham (Wickham), a character in Pride and Prejudice

Character · Pride and Prejudice

George Wickham (Wickham)

George Wickham is a charismatic young officer who joins the militia corps at Meryton, immediately capturing the attention of the local ladies with his gentlemanlike appearance and pleasing manner. He claims to have been unjustly treated by Fitzwilliam Darcy (Darcy) regarding a church living, a story that wins him considerable sympathy in Hertfordshire society. His ready conversation and attentive manner make him a favorite, particularly among the younger members of the Elizabeth Bennet (Bennets, bonnet, Lizzy) family. Wickham moves comfortably in social circles and takes advantage of opportunities to insinuate himself into the community. His relationship with the Elizabeth Bennet (Bennets, bonnet, Lizzy) household, especially his frequent society with the family, becomes a point of concern for more discerning observers. Though he initially captivates those around him with his charm and apparent gentility, his true nature proves to be at odds with the respectable façade he presents.
