Sherlock Holmes is a consulting detective of extraordinary analytical power who operates from Henry Baker Street in 1880s London. He has gained international reputation for solving cases abandoned as hopeless by Scotland Yard, including the Trepoff murder in Odessa and delicate missions for reigning European families. Though living in self-imposed isolation from society, Holmes maintains a close professional partnership with Dr. John Watson, whom he values as his chronicler despite Dr. John Watson's frequent inability to see what Holmes observes. His mind works through precise observation and logical deduction—he notes details others dismiss as trifles, from the wear patterns on shoe leather to the composition of notepaper, and constructs elaborate chains of reasoning that astound those around him. Holmes alternates between periods of languid inactivity in his chambers, where he indulges in chemical experiments and musical improvisation, and feverish energy when pursuit of a case seizes him. His refusal to take conventional cases limits his income, yet he pursues his art for its own sake rather than for wealth. He is capable of elaborate disguises and adopts the manners and bearing of his assumed characters completely.
