Character · The Catcher in the Rye

Horwitz

Horwitz is a taxi driver whom Holden Caulfield encounters in New York City and with whom he has a somewhat rambling conversation about where the ducks in Central Park go in the winter. Horwitz is a working-class man of middle age who represents a kind of straightforward, unpretentious authenticity that Holden Caulfield finds less phony than the upper-class world. He is patient with Holden Caulfield's questions, though he seems puzzled by Holden Caulfield's preoccupation with the ducks. His honest, direct manner and lack of pretense make him one of the few characters toward whom Holden Caulfield does not direct his full contempt.
