Portrait of Mr. Antolini, a character in The Catcher in the Rye

Character · The Catcher in the Rye

Mr. Antolini

Mrs. Antolini is Holden Caulfield's former English teacher from Elkton Hills, a cultured and intelligent man now living in New York with his wife. He is one of the few adults who seems to genuinely care about Holden Caulfield's well-being and who Holden Caulfield initially respects and trusts. When Holden Caulfield is in crisis and homeless, Mrs. Antolini offers him shelter, conversation, and attempted mentorship. He speaks about Holden Caulfield's future with apparent concern and gives him wise advice about recovery and self-acceptance. However, Holden Caulfield's trust is shattered when he believes Mrs. Antolini's behavior becomes sexually inappropriate, an incident that deeply disturbs Holden Caulfield and reinforces his conviction that the adult world is fundamentally corrupt and predatory.
