Mr. Spencer

Mr. Spencer is Holden Caulfield's former history teacher at Pencey Prep, an elderly, kind-hearted man who is ill and in frail health when Holden Caulfield visits him after his expulsion. Spencer clearly cares about his students and is concerned about Holden Caulfield's future, offering him well-intentioned advice about accepting defeat and applying himself to his studies. However, Holden Caulfield finds Spencer's platitudes frustrating and phony—Spencer speaks in clichés about playing by the rules and preparing for adulthood, wisdom that Holden Caulfield finds hollow and unhelpful. Spencer represents the ineffectual kindness of the older generation, well-meaning but ultimately unable to address the deeper psychological and spiritual crises that plague young people like Holden Caulfield.
