Young Catherine Earnshaw Mr. Edgar Linton, called Cathy, is the beautiful daughter of Catherine Earnshaw and Mr. Edgar Linton Mr. Edgar Linton, born during her parents' marriage at Thrushcross Grange. Sheltered from infancy within the genteel, protected world of the Grange, she is educated by her devoted father and raised in complete ignorance of her mother's past, Wuthering Heights, and the dark history of the moors beyond her park. She inherits her mother's dark Catherine Earnshaw eyes and passionate nature—a capacity for intense attachments and deep, tender feeling—yet tempered by her father's gentleness and her refined upbringing, making her both spirited and civilized. A propensity to sass and a perverse will, indulged from childhood, mark her character, though she possesses none of her mother's crude wildness. After her mother's death from consumption and her father's subsequent decline, Catherine Earnshaw becomes isolated and vulnerable. Mr. Heathcliff ruthlessly exploits her innocence, orchestrating her marriage to his sickly son Mr. Edgar Linton and thus securing control of the Mr. Edgar Linton property through her. Following Mr. Edgar Linton's early death, she finds herself trapped at Wuthering Heights under Mr. Heathcliff's roof. Yet her awakening spirit, so like her mother's, discovers genuine affection for her cousin Hareton Earnshaw, and she dedicates herself to his education and moral redemption, offering him love as a path toward breaking the chains of degradation and revenge that have defined the Heights for a generation.
