Ulysses (Odysseus)
The hero of the epic — king of Ithaca, famous for cunning as much as courage. When the story opens, he has been absent for twenty years: ten fighting at Troy, ten trying to get home. Butler's translation calls him Ulysses throughout.

Penelope
Ulysses's wife, left in Ithaca with their young son. She is known for intelligence and patience — and for holding off a crowd of suitors who want to marry her and take the throne.

Telemachus
Ulysses and Penelope's son, now a young man. He grew up without his father and is just beginning to find his own authority in a household overrun by guests who don't respect him.

Athene (Minerva)
Goddess of wisdom and warfare, and Ulysses's divine patron. She appears throughout the poem in disguise, nudging mortals toward the outcomes she favors. Butler's translation uses the Roman name Minerva.

The Suitors
A group of noblemen who have occupied Ulysses's hall, eating his livestock and pressuring Penelope to choose a new husband. They represent the disorder that has taken over Ithaca in the king's absence.
