Portrait of Lord Arthur Holmwood, a character in Dracula

Character · Dracula

Lord Arthur Holmwood

Arthur Holmwood is a young English nobleman of good character and deep feeling, devoted to his fiancée Lucy Westenra. Though not introduced until his beloved is already falling under Count Dracula's influence, Arthur loves her truly and struggles desperately with the knowledge of her condition and transformation. The loss of Lucy Westenra transforms his grief into grim determination; he becomes one of the core members of the band dedicated to destroying the vampire that took his love from him. When Lord Godalming's father dies and he inherits the title, his elevated status does nothing to diminish his commitment to the perilous work of confronting supernatural evil. He demonstrates the courage and martial capability expected of English nobility, and his presence among the hunters—joined equally for love of Lucy Westenra and for the broader cause of justice—reflects the moral weight of the struggle.
