Professor Abraham Van Helsing

Professor Abraham Van Helsing is a learned scholar and man of medicine from Buda-Pesth University, whose knowledge extends far beyond the conventional bounds of modern science into the realms of ancient lore, superstition, and the supernatural. He is older now, long past the years of personal ambition or romance, and he has trained himself across long years to maintain an open mind toward truths that others dismiss as impossible. When called upon by Dr. John Seward to examine Lucy Westenra, he arrives with skepticism but is convinced by evidence into one of the few people willing to believe in vampires.

Van Helsing becomes the intellectual and spiritual leader of the small band of heroes dedicated to destroying Count Dracula. His scholarship on vampire lore is thorough—he consults historical records, communicates with fellow scholars, and methodically catalogs the vampire's powers and limitations. He understands that faith, sacred symbols, and ancient traditions hold keys to combating supernatural evil. Though aged, Van Helsing proves capable of great physical endurance and emotional strength; he does not shrink from terrible tasks. He speaks with an accent reflecting his continental origin and sometimes employs broken English, yet his wisdom and authority command respect. He carries a golden crucifix as both spiritual armor and emblem of his commitment to the cause.
