Miss Havisham

Miss Havisham is the tragic and terrifying center of Satis House, a woman preserved in the moment of her greatest wound. Abandoned at the altar on her wedding day, she has refused to leave her house or acknowledge the passing of time, remaining dressed in her wedding finery while the estate decays around her into a monument of grief and rot. Her wealth and eccentricity have allowed her to indulge a singular obsession: the cultivation of revenge through Estella, the girl she adopted and trained from infancy to be beautiful, accomplished, and utterly incapable of love—a weapon designed to wound the male sex as she herself was wounded.

When Pip (Philip Pirrip) enters her life, Miss Havisham becomes fascinated by him, though largely as a mirror in which to observe Estella's effects. She encourages his love for the girl with a kind of greedy intensity, delighting in the pain she senses growing within him. Her passion is terrible to behold—expressed through clenched hands, low urgent whispers, and an almost manic fervor. Yet beneath her bitterness and madness lies a woman broken by love itself, trapped in a prison of her own making, waiting in darkness for a resolution that will never come.
