Character · Great Expectations
Pip (Philip Pirrip)
Pip's Sister (Mrs. Joe Gargery) is an orphan living with his sister and her husband Joe Gargery, a blacksmith, in the marshes of Kent. Sensitive and imaginative, he harbors vague dissatisfactions with his humble station until he is invited to Satis House to keep company with the beautiful and mysteriously wealthy Miss Havisham and her adopted daughter Estella. This encounter awakens in him a burning desire for self-improvement and social elevation. When a mysterious benefactor grants him great expectations and sets him up as a gentleman in London, Pip's Sister (Mrs. Joe Gargery) assumes it is Miss Havisham grooming him for Estella. He embarks on his education with fervor, makes friends in his fellow students, and pursues Estella with passionate intensity, all while growing increasingly ashamed of his origins and resentful of poor Joe Gargery.
Yet as his circumstances shift and secrets unravel, Pip's Sister (Mrs. Joe Gargery) discovers that his expectations come not from Miss Havisham but from an escaped convict he aided as a child. The revelation devastates him, forcing a reckoning with his own ingratitude and the shallow values he has embraced. Through hardship and loss, Pip's Sister (Mrs. Joe Gargery) gradually learns the true worth of fidelity, humility, and love beyond social pretense, moving toward a mature understanding of himself and his place in the world.
