Sarah Pocket

Sarah Herbert Pocket is a poor relation of Miss Havisham's, living in a state of dependent anxiety, perpetually calculating her chances of inheriting a portion of the old woman's considerable wealth. Thin, sallow, and habitually discontented, she wears an expression of chronic resentment and envy. She fawns over Miss Havisham with calculated deference while nursing deep jealousy, particularly toward Estella, whom she regards as an undeserving rival for the old woman's attention and fortune. Her character illustrates the moral degradation that can result from living in hope of inheritance and in the shadow of another's wealth.
