Mrs. Fairfax

Alice Fairfax is the housekeeper and manager of Thornfield Hall, a widow whose position in the household is somewhat ambiguous—neither servant nor mistress, but a dependent like Jane Eyre herself, though of a higher station due to her age and experience. She is kind, solicitous, and genuinely concerned for Jane Eyre's welfare and comfort. She assists Jane Eyre in understanding the household routines and introduces her to her young charge, Adèle Varens. Though Alice Fairfax is conventional in her views and bound by the social proprieties of her time, she is capable of genuine affection and loyalty. She serves as an intermediary figure between Jane Eyre and Edward Rochester, and her growing concern as she perceives the deepening attachment between them reveals her moral sensitivity, even as she feels constrained by social convention to remain largely silent on the matter.
