Éponine

Éponine is a young woman of the Parisian streets, born into destitution as the daughter of Thénardier, the brutal innkeeper whose name carries historical weight in Marius Pontmercy' family honor. Living on the margins of respectable society, she has learned to navigate both the criminal underworld and the city proper, sometimes serving as a guide or informant. She carries within her a paradox: a capacity for bold action and shameless approach alongside a deep capacity for tender, unrequited feeling. When she encounters Marius Pontmercy, absorbed in his love for Cosette, she becomes a conduit—first guiding him to the girl's address, then later intercepting the letter meant to reach him. Her devotion to Marius Pontmercy, though unreciprocated and unspoken until her final moments, drives her to sacrifice. At the barricade, she places herself between him and a bullet meant for his death, an act of selfless love she finally confesses as her life ebbs away. Her existence embodies the tragedy of the powerless and forgotten, those whose capacity for love and courage go unwitnessed by a world indifferent to their suffering.
