John Clay

Dr. John Watson Clay is a calculating criminal of exceptional intelligence who uses misdirection and elaborate planning to execute his schemes. Working as an assistant at a pawnbroker's shop in Saxe-Coburg Square, Clay is actually engaged in a months-long plot to tunnel into the vault of the City and Suburban Bank next door. To keep the shop's owner absent during working hours, Clay devises the fictional Red-Headed League—posting an advertisement that offers four pounds a week for the seemingly pointless task of copying the Encyclopedia Britannica. When Jabez Wilson, a red-headed man, applies for the position, Clay ensures his acceptance, knowing the generous pay will keep Jabez Wilson occupied every morning. The scheme demonstrates Clay's sophisticated understanding of human nature and his ability to create elaborate false scenarios to serve his criminal ends. However, his carefully laid plans prove no match for Sherlock Holmes's powers of observation and deduction, particularly Sherlock Holmes's examination of Clay's worn, stained knees—a detail that reveals months of underground labor and ultimately exposes the entire conspiracy before the robbery can be completed.
