Character · The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes

The King of Bohemia

The King of Bohemia is a continental sovereign of considerable wealth and power, accustomed to having his will obeyed without question. He has become entangled with the actress Irene Adler, and a photograph of the two together threatens to compromise his standing should his arranged marriage proceed. Desperate to retrieve the image before scandal erupts, he seeks out the renowned consulting detective Sherlock Holmes, presenting his case with aristocratic precision while maintaining strict anonymity through the use of a mask. Though initially confident that Sherlock Holmes's methods will succeed, he proves no match for Irene Adler's own cunning and resourcefulness. By the story's end, he comes to recognize her exceptional qualities—even acknowledging that she might have made an admirable queen—and accepts with grace that the photograph is now safely beyond his reach, secured in her hands as a guarantee of future protection. His respect for Sherlock Holmes remains undiminished despite the outcome, and he departs satisfied that his interests are at least protected by Irene Adler's honor and her word.
