Mary Sutherland

Mary Sutherland is a young, respectable woman living in London during the 1880s with her mother and stepfather, James Windibank. Modest in station and somewhat sheltered, she finds her quiet life transformed when she encounters Hosmer Angel, a gentleman who courts her with apparent devotion and becomes her fiancé. When Hosmer Angel disappears mysteriously on her wedding morning, Mary is left bewildered and heartbroken, turning to Sherlock Holmes for answers. Though she initially resists accepting the truth about what has occurred, she is fundamentally decent and sensible, capable of understanding even uncomfortable realities once they are clearly explained to her. Her case illustrates how even an intelligent woman can fall prey to calculated deception when emotions and family loyalty are weaponized against her.
