Sofya Adelaïda Ivanovna Karamazov is the second wife of Fyodor Pavlovitch Karamazov Fyodor Pavlovitch Karamazov and the mother of Ivan Fyodorovitch Karamazov and Alyosha, a gentle, tragic figure who appears in the novel primarily through the compassion she inspired in others and her influence on her sons. Described as a meek creature of humble origin, she endured the degradations of marriage to a depraved sensualist with what appears to have been passive suffering rather than active resistance.
