Pride and Prejudice Characters — Grouped by Family (Spoiler-Free)

Pride and Prejudice characters by family — Bennets, Bingleys, and the Darcy circle. Elizabeth, Darcy, and Jane explained spoiler-free on CharacterViz.

Netflix's Pride and Prejudice limited series arrives in fall 2026 — and Jane Austen's cast is easier to follow when you know which households and alliances each name belongs to. Five Bennet sisters, a wealthy newcomer at Netherfield, a proud Derbyshire landlord, and a web of cousins and clergymen all orbit the same marriage market.

This guide groups the main Pride and Prejudice characters by family and close circle, without spoiling what happens later. For chapter-by-chapter analysis, portraits, and relationship maps, see the full Pride and Prejudice character guide on CharacterViz.

The Bennet family of Longbourn

The Bennets live at Longbourn in Hertfordshire. An entail means the estate will pass to a male heir outside the immediate family, which is why Mrs. Bennet treats every eligible bachelor as urgent business.

Mr. Bennet — The witty, withdrawn master of the house; he prefers his library to his wife's schemes.

Mrs. Bennet — Loud, nervous, and single-minded about marrying off her daughters.

Jane Bennet — The eldest sister: beautiful, gentle, and inclined to trust people.

Elizabeth Bennet — The second daughter and the novel's center of gravity — quick, observant, and unwilling to flatter rank.

Mary, Kitty, and Lydia Bennet — The younger three add vanity, silliness, and (in Lydia's case) reckless social ambition to a household where reputation matters.

The Gardiners (Elizabeth's sensible relations)

Mr. and Mrs. Gardiner are Mrs. Bennet's brother and sister-in-law — tradespeople in London, but models of good sense and warm affection. Elizabeth and Jane trust them when local society feels narrow or foolish.

The Lucas family and Mr. Collins

Sir William Lucas and his wife live near Longbourn; their daughter Charlotte Lucas is Elizabeth's oldest friend. Charlotte reads the marriage market with clear eyes — very different from Elizabeth's romantic standards.

When the entail threatens the Bennets, Mr. Collins — the distant cousin who will inherit Longbourn — arrives as Lady Catherine's obsequious clergyman. His connection to the de Bourgh family pulls the plot toward Kent.

The Bingley household (Netherfield)

Charles Bingley rents Netherfield Park and brings his unmarried sister and a wealthy friend from Derbyshire. This is the social earthquake that wakes up Hertfordshire.

Charles Bingley — Open, friendly, and immediately drawn to Jane Bennet.

Caroline Bingley — Charles's sister: fashionable, competitive, and eager to impress Mr. Darcy.

Mrs. Hurst — Caroline's married sister, usually sharing Caroline's opinions and entertainments.

The Darcy circle (Pemberley and Derbyshire)

Fitzwilliam Darcy is master of Pemberley and Bingley's closest friend. His reserve at the Meryton assembly makes him infamous before anyone knows him well.

Georgiana Darcy — Darcy's younger sister; she rarely appears early but matters to how readers understand his sense of duty.

Colonel Fitzwilliam — Darcy's cousin, a younger son with easier manners and no estate of his own.

Lady Catherine de Bourgh and allies

Lady Catherine de Bourgh presides over Rosings Park in Kent — domineering, rich, and convinced that rank should dictate every marriage. She employs Mr. Collins and expects the world to agree with her.

Miss de Bourgh — Lady Catherine's sickly daughter, treated as a destined bride for Darcy whether she wishes it or not.

George Wickham (no fixed household)

George Wickham is a militia officer stationed near Meryton. He is not family to anyone in the main cast, but he attaches himself to the Bennet neighborhood with a story that turns Elizabeth against Darcy — at least at first.
