The Pale Young Gentleman (Herbert's first meeting with Pip) (Herbert)

The pale young gentleman is a minor character encountered by Pip (Philip Pirrip) at Satis House, with whom Pip (Philip Pirrip) engages in an impulsive and rather brutal physical fight in the brewery. The encounter occurs early in Pip (Philip Pirrip)'s visits to Miss Havisham's house, when Pip (Philip Pirrip) is still a child and confused about social conventions and proper behavior. After being thoroughly beaten and injured, the pale young gentleman disappears from the narrative, never to be mentioned or encountered again, though Pip (Philip Pirrip) spends considerable anxiety worrying about the consequences of his violence.
