Sherlock Holmes Characters — Who Appears in Each Story (Spoiler-Free)
Sherlock Holmes characters by story — who's who in each Adventures case, from Irene Adler to the Speckled Band. Spoiler-free cast guide on CharacterViz.
Arthur Conan Doyle's The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes collects twelve short mysteries — each with its own client, suspects, and one-off cast. Holmes and Watson appear in every story, but the case-by-case characters change completely from one adventure to the next. If you are reading the book straight through (or jumping to a famous title like "The Speckled Band"), it helps to know who belongs to which story.
This guide groups the main figures by story, without spoiling how any case resolves. For story-by-story analysis, portraits, and relationship maps, see the full Sherlock Holmes character guide on CharacterViz.
Holmes and Watson — in every story
These two anchor the collection. Sherlock Holmes is the consulting detective of 221B Baker Street; Dr. John Watson is his flatmate, friend, and the narrator who publishes these accounts. Inspector Lestrade of Scotland Yard also turns up repeatedly — the official face of an investigation Holmes often steers from the sidelines.
